Innovation requires courage because to enable the innovator we must empower him or her by rewarding his or her courage to let go of the familiar and explore new and unexplored more risky areas. By the law of averages the innovative thinker or creator will fail more than his or her colleagues who dare not be courageous. Nothing impedes change more drastically than censor and nothing enables it more than encouragement. Imagine the fear generated by some when the first spark of fire burst forth into flames and imagine the enlightment by generated by others. So it was and so it continues to be. As Machiavelli noted nearly 500 years ago: "...the innovator has for enemies all those who have done well under old conditions..."

Thanks JJ for conducting such an informative interview on a topic that transcends the core characteristics of what we do in our business practices every day. Professor Degraeve’s comments have truly enlightened my view of how decision quality is not necessarily results-based. The importance of the reflective nature of the decision making process needs to become more prominent in today’s fast-paced, reactive, business world. Imagine the world if more decision makers would take the time to reflect and analyze, improving decision quality across the board.
